In March this year I achieved something huge and it ruined my progress. Let me explain. Four years ago I set out to turn my vocation (coaching) into a business. I had no idea how to do that when I started, but I had faith that if I trusted myself, worked hard and didn't quit, I could do it. And I did. I've made my living from this for 3 years now, which is something I am very proud of. So what's the problem? What happened in March is that I ran the numbers on my current year and realised I was okay. I had enough business to last me a whole year. And, I looked at my vision board and realised that I'd achieved almost everything I dreamed of. With that realisation, my motivation vanished. Because I could no longer use the same fuel I had used to propel me to this point. Fortunately for me, I help people with exactly this problem. People wondering, what shall I do with the next phase of my life/work? And so, I applied my own coaching to myself. It took longer than I would have hoped, but, just a couple of weeks ago it all clicked. I could see my vision for the next 3 years and it is massive. I don't know how I am going to do it, but I have faith that if I trust myself, work hard and don't quit, I can. The first big step in this is arriving tomorrow. In front of 290 people in Leeds I am going launch my new direction with a VERY SPECIAL OFFER. It will be limited to the first 5 people who grab it. But that feels slightly unfair to you, dear reader. Some of you have been reading my writing for years at this point and I really, truly appreciate that. And so, tomorrow morning I will email you all exactly the same special offer. It will drop around 8am and you'll have until midnight to take it. I promise it won't be repeated. So, watch your inbox and thank you for your support. Stephen |
Weekly writing on decision-making, authority and leading under pressure. For leaders who want thinking, not motivation.
The weekly session in the Stephen Lock Academy today is about Overcoming Fears. I don't mean spiders and toy dolls (my brother Andrew hates them). No, I mean the more emotional and interpersonal fears that hold us back. Some of them are really common like: Rejection: "If they're unhappy with me, I'm not safe." Being judged: "Their reaction to my work is a verdict on me." Others are a bit less common like: Success and visibility: "If this works, more will be expected and I'll be seen."...
Yesterday I told you I have decided to do build from my passion. This is it. To be clear, I love my work. I love 1:1 coaching. I love team coaching. I love motivational speaking. I love facilitating. But my absolute passion? Is helping people to become the very best version of themselves that they can be. Now THAT is lights me up. People who follow my process and say, "I want to be the best in the world", or people who were stressed and then say, "I realise that I am already happy", or people...
Today we had a great call in the Stephen Lock Academy community. This is something we do every Friday, but this week's had an extra positive energy about it. Because we're all embarking on a challenge. Let's rewind a little. A few weeks ago I was talking to my client C. He's brilliant, charming and highly skilled. He was also a bit overwhelmed and failing to make progress on his goals. I am delighted to have received a lovely voice note from him today, so I know that's no longer the case....
